Oxy-fuel combustion

With over 200 oxy-fuel glass furnace installations in all glass segments, Praxair is a leader in oxy-fuel combustion technologies for the glass industry.  These technologies include Praxair’s newly commercialized OPTIMELTTM thermochemical regenerator system, which can reduce natural gas and oxygen consumption of oxy-fuel glass furnaces by about 16 to 20%; advanced oxy-fuel burners for glass furnaces which offer wide flame coverage, low volatilization, high flame luminosity, optimum heat transfer efficiency and NOx emissions performance; and advanced air separation plants for reliable oxygen production and supply.

OPTIMELT Thermochemical Regenerator System

Praxair’s new OPTIMELTTM thermochemical regenerator heat recovery system is a compelling low–cost solution to maximize the heat recovery from glass furnaces, improve energy efficiency of the furnaces, and minimize furnace emissions. The OPTIMELT system delivers these benefits using regenerators similar to conventional air-regenerators to combine the conventional preheating step with a chemical reforming process.  In the reforming step, a mixture of natural gas and recirculated flue gas react endothermically in the hot regenerator checker pack to produce a hot syngas stream which is combusted in the furnace with oxygen. This combined preheating and reforming process results in a net reduction of natural gas and oxygen of about 20% to 30%, compared to conventional oxy-fuel and regenerative air-fuel furnaces, respectively.
