NSG begins construction of Japanese solar facility

The NSG Group has started the installation of a solar facility at its Maizuru plant in Japan, as part of a power purchase agreement (PPA).

The long-term PPA will supply renewable electricity generated from solar panels installed on the premises of the Maizuru plant.

It is the first onsite solar project for NSG in Japan, and the installation work has just started.

Construction began on 1 March and the facility will be operational in October 2024.

In this project, a total of 3,064 solar panels, with the capacity of 1.15 MWp, will be installed on unused land at the Maizuru plant.

The panels will be manufactured by First Solar, a global manufacturer of thin-film solar panels that has a long-standing partnership with NSG Group.

The solar modules will also contain transparent conductive oxide (TCO) glass made by NSG Group using its proprietary online coating technology.

The facility will be installed and operated by BayWa r.e. Japan, a renewable energy provider.

90% of the electricity generated will be purchased by NSG Group over a period of 25 years at a contracted fix price.

The facility is expected to supply 1,411 MW of renewable energy annually with carbon reduction effect about 541t-CO2 per year.

On the project, NSG said: "While the demand for renewable electricity in the market is increasing in the background of global carbon reduction, there is a risk of soaring electricity prices.

"The introduction of onsite PPAs utilising idle land like this project in Maizuru will help stabilise the procurement of renewable energy for medium to long term."
